The Super Nintendo Entertainment System was host to numerous classic video games, including titles such as Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy, Street Fighter II, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Star Fox, F-Zero, and Super Mario Kart. The system initially had a slow start trailing behind the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive in Europe and Japan) though it largely surpassed NEC's TurboGrafx-16. While not as successful as the Nintendo Entertainment System before it, the SNES still proved a formidable competitor in the 16-bit era eventually seizing first place for the generation.
